What happened?

Writer's picture: LightInZambiaLightInZambia

Outside my office window, I have a tree that reminds me of a weeping willow with branches that sway in the breeze. It flowers too and is a favorite of birds and lizards- or it was. I used it as an example of a tree I liked when showing my gardener one I wanted to prune. The next day, I passed by it and said, "What happened to the tree?" Every beautiful flowing branch was hacked off. Language is tricky- the gardener thought I was asking him to cut off all the brown branches on that tree, too- not just the banana tree.

When I pass by it now, I'm reminded that sometimes in life, our cherished things are broken. Whatever the cause, we find ourselves asking, "What happened?" How we respond then tells us a lot about who we are. Will we, like Jonah, tell God we are better off dead because our vine died? Or will we smile at the memory and trust God to make it beautiful again? Let's give God our broken places today and every day.
